through a slightly darker looking glass...

Picture

What started as enhancing mailing labels on packages being sent to friends, out of a sense of fun, expanded into pursuing collage as one of my chosen art forms. What began as an interest in Mythology, especially the Odyssey and Odysseus's encounter with the Sirens, became an obsession with idea and the image of the Sirens, female-headed, bird of prey bodied hybrids, epitomized for me by Fernand Khnoppf's "Sleeping Medusa". Borrowing from him, and other artists who's work has inspired or haunted me, as well as mining my own imagination, I've been exploring what possibilities there might be in terms of image and narrative with what has been, up to this point, a limited vocabulary. I've surrendered to compulsion and obsession when it comes to particular images, believing that when your Muse speaks, you'd better listen at the risk of her not speaking to you (even if she seems to repeat herself)- but mostly, I'm trying to hold onto that sense of fun I felt with those enhanced labels (in both collage and drawings), no matter how complicated the imagery may became.
